Follow Dave & Backporch Coffee Roasters:
With a focus on sourcing quality beans and roasting in small batches, Dave Beach has quickly gained a reputation as a premium coffee roaster in the state of Oregon. After opening Backporch Coffee Roasters in 2006, Dave and his wife Majell have expanded to own multiple coffee shops in their hometown of Bend. Dave continues to focus on offering the best quality coffee as he develops relationships, improves his craft and expands his ever-deepening love for the coffee industry.
Each year, Dave and members of his staff travel to coffee farms in Central America to taste and source coffees, visit with local farmers and their operations, and help develop new coffees for down the road. According to Dave, however, sharing in family meals, drinking coffee together and nurturing these long lasting relationships is what really makes the annual trips special.
In his spare time, Dave enjoys spending time with his wife and his beautiful little girl, Scout Olivia.
We asked Dave:
Do you have a favorite roast, style or type of coffee drink?
I pretty much just drink black coffee, and I prefer lighter roasts. If I had to pick one country (which is incredibly hard), I'd probably pick El Salvador. We travel to El Salvador each year and have established an incredible relationship with a family there. It would be hard to choose anything else.
I started off as a hobby roaster with very little business training. I have learned a ton in the last 7 years and still can't believe that all of this started as a little hobby for me. I would have never imagined I would be traveling to different countries and staying on coffee farms with my staff. It's all a bit dreamy to me to be this far in business. I love it!
Dave's Top 5:
- My great customers and staff!
- My 12 kilo Diedrich drum roaster of course!
- My many coffee brewing devices. If I had to pick one, I'd have to say my chemex pot.
- My Reg Barber tamper (It's the only brand tamper I use).
- My white 18 oz. Hydro Flask - it's always on me, really. Too much coffee without proper hydration is grounds for disaster.
