Legendary Extreme Skier and BASE Jumper Shane McConkey died at just 39 while shooting a new movie in Italy today.

According to ESPN, McConkey died in Corvara a small town in the Italian Dolomites during a ski-BASE mid air malfunction, in which one of his skis failed to release after his cliff drop in.

Sources for Matchstick Films didn’t go into detail with regards to just how McConkey died, but Extreme big-air skiing BASE Jumping are inherently dangerous sports, especially when combined. Both are heavily featured in all of Matchstick’s movies. Among the most famous of which are Claim and the Shaun White snowboarding flick feature˜For Right or Wrong’.

Whistler Blackcomb where McConkey was a regular even has a run named after him at.

From all of us at Hydro Flask we’ll miss you Shane. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Sherry, Ayla, and the entire McConkey family.

BPA-Maybe Yes-Maybe No. My Opinion on Bisphenol A

BPA-Maybe Yes-Maybe No. My Opinion on Bisphenol A - by Jodie Michael

To say that there has been some buzz recently about BPA would be a major understatement. There have been hundreds of experiments and literally thousands of articles written on the adverse affects of BPA. So what about the articles out there that are claiming that Bisphenol A aka BPA is not as bad as most would lead you to believe?

Well I know that I for one was relieved to find that David Case a writer for Fast Company Magazine did the research and found that just like most things that are we are told by “Big Brother”  to be scared of-maybe isn’t as bad as it seems. And similarly if we are told that something is safe perhaps a little more time needs to be spent researching the topic. What David found is more than a little shocking.

Of the more than 100 independently funded experiments on BPA, about 90% have found evidence of adverse health effects. On the other hand, every single industry-funded study ever conducted — 14 in all — has found no such effects.

It is the industry-funded studies that have held sway among regulators. This is thanks largely to a small group of “product defense” consultants — also funded by the chemical industry — who have worked to sow doubt about negative effects of BPA by using a playbook that borrows from the wars over tobacco, asbestos, and other public-health controversies. A secretive Beltway public-relations consultant. A government contractor funded by the industries it was hired to assess. A Harvard research center with a history of conflicts of interest. These have been the key actors in how the science of BPA has been interpreted by the government. And it is their work, as much as the science itself, that has stymied regulation.

I will be the first to admit that BPA is something I don’t want any part of, nor do I want my children to have any exposure to-if that’s even a real possibility- Now I am by no means a chemist, scientist, or even know the difference between a Burets and a Beaker, but I do know that we don’t know what else may be lurking in plastic and aluminum bottles. Why voluntary ingest even a potentially harmful chemical when I can skip the source-plastic and aluminum water bottles- altogether and pick a perfectly healthy alternative such as Stainless Steel?

Just a thought

ORV Alguita Tracks Devastating Effects of Plastics

March 19th, 2009 by Hydro Flask

Here’s  something you may not know about plastic: every piece of it ever produced, since it came on the scene in the 1950s, is still with us today. And it isn’t going anywhere.

Plastic is a non-biodegradable substance. No organisms, no bio-engineered bacteria are coming to the rescue to break down the molecular make-up of any of the plastic we create. It’s here to stay. And a great deal of it is floating around a Texas-sized whirlpool called the Northern Pacific Gyre, which has become infamously known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.Click HERE to read Adam Freeman Pockross intresting story.

Maybe you’re tired of the blues and need a little spice in your life-perhaps Jalapeno is more of what you need right now. And of course if you are a Libra and just can’t make up your mind-Get both. Boxing and MMA still worlds apart

Saturday evening is going to be an interesting one for the statisticians.

That’s when Roy Jones Jr., boxing’s former pound-for-pound king — crown now hanging lopsidedly off his head — will both promote and headline March Badness, a grammatically suspect pay-per-view event that can brag of being the first high-visibility card to integrate boxing and mixed martial arts contests. Maker acknowledges BPA worries

March 12th, 2009 by Hydro Flask

Sunoco, the gas and chemical maker that once staunchly defended bisphenol A, is now refusing to sell the chemical to companies for use in food and water containers for children younger than 3, saying it can’t be certain of the compound’s safety.

Sunoco plans to require its customers to guarantee that the chemical will not be used in children’s food products. To read Susanne Rust and Meg Kissinger of the Journal Sentinel’s full story, click HERE.
