Product Designer


Position Description:
Hydro Flask is looking for an experienced, technical, and innovative Product Designer to join its growing team in Bend, Oregon. The Product Designer will lead Hydro Flask’s design efforts and be an important part of the company’s continued success. We seek someone with proven experience in translating product briefs into exceptional product solutions with high consumer value on aggressive schedules. Ideal candidates will be self-functioning, while at the same time open and collaborative with your team members.

Specific Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • On-time delivery of innovative consumer product designs that precisely target the specific market, activity, customer, and cost requirements outlined in the product briefs.
  • Identify potential new materials, textiles, trims, and fabrication techniques related to new designs.
  • Produce clear and comprehensive hard goods design spec packages for development by Product Design Engineer.
  • Conduct market research, trend analysis, and human factors research pertaining to related project requirements.
  • Create detailed physical prototypes and 3D computer models for engineering development of consumer hard goods as needed.
  • Provide on-site development support at overseas facilities to supervise new product development.
  • Perform miscellaneous tasks as assigned

Job Requirements and Technical Skills

  • Must possess excellent sketching skills and be able to show an evolved design process through drawings.
  • Intimate knowledge of hard goods construction, techniques, fabrics, and materials.
  • Must be extremely Illustrator CS savvy, efficient at creating product lineart and design specifications.
  • Have the ability to create compelling story boards, trend research, and color reports to convey point of view.
  • Minimum level II computer modeling skills in Solidworks, Rhino3D, or comparable modeling package.
  • Ability to design for a variety of hard goods manufacturing processes, including but not limited to injection molding.
  • Must be proficient in traditional model making and prototyping and be familiar with basic process lab machinery and adhere to safety guidelines.
  • Honed ability to articulate design direction in an effective and persuasive manner to a variety of different audiences.
  • Openly communicate between all team members to efficiently hit project targets.
  • Outward enthusiasm towards the field of design that can be translated into game-changing products for the Hydro Flask brand.
  • The drive to exceed expectations on a regular basis.

Education and Experience

  • 4 year degree in Industrial Design or equivalent; Post graduate degree a plus.
  • Minimum 6 years experience of proven commercial success designing technical Hard-good products.
  • Direct development experience with overseas manufacturing.
  • Experience designing hard good consumer products a significant plus.

Product Design Engineer


Position Description:
Hydro Flask is looking for an experienced, technical, and innovative Product Design Engineer to join its growing team in Bend, Oregon. The Product Designer will lead Hydro Flask’s design efforts and be an important part of the company’s continued success. We seek someone with a proven track record in mechanical design of outdoor or performance products with solid analytical skills, an understanding of plastic and steel manufacturing, and a drive to create high performance products and exceptional quality.

Specific Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Participate with cross-functional teams to advance new hydration product concepts through the product development process
  • Design and develop new product concepts and existing product improvement, using CAD software and related tools
  • Perform product prototype testing and troubleshooting for design refinement and ultimately, product design validation
  • Deliver manufacturable and performance-optimized final product design for production
  • Liaise with manufacturing partners and product manager for production of new products and manufacturing validation testing
  • Carry out product certification and product quality assurance activities
  • Support operations and product management with quality testing, failure analysis and continuous improvement
  • With Product Management, benchmarks current and competitive products using qualitative and quantitative methods
  • Support development of product instructions and packaging copy as needed
  • Perform miscellaneous tasks as assigned

Requirements

  • Experience designing parts for mass-production processes such as: injection molding and sheet metal forming; direct experience with fluid containers a plus
  • Effective project management, collaboration and communication abilities within a multifunctional R&D, Sales & Marketing, and Operations environment
  • Strong appreciation of the needs and desires of active end-users
  • Practical hands-on build and test capabilities
  • Strong follow through and ability to take responsibility for tasks to completion
  • Creativity, curiosity, and a desire to continuously learn and improve
  • Strong computer and CAD expertise
  • Ability to meet deadlines
  • Travel as required both domestically and internationally

Education and Experience

  • A mechanical engineering degree or equivalent
  • 5+ years of experience in product design and engineering with products at all states of the product life cycle
  • Experience working for a well-known brand a plus
  • Experience with CAD and rapid prototyping
  • Experience working with third party testing labs
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision
  • Enjoys the challenge of an open, creative, fast paced environment
  • Good interpersonal skills with a willingness to communicate effectively and frequently
