Rated 3 out of 5 by from A lot for a little I picked one of these up a few months ago for camping and taking my food into the field with me and was happy to have it. 12oz is enough for a lunch but after using it a few times I’m 50/50 with it. During the summer it kept my rice meals pretty warm throughout the day but after that is where I start to fall off. I have recently been using it for soups and have found that it not only struggled to keep anything warm for more than an hour or two (4 hours is cold) but it has leaked every day to some extent. My recommendation would be yes to dry foods but no to anything liquid...

Rated 2 out of 5 by from No Lunch We LOVE Hydroflask and all of our tumbler and bottles that we use for drinks. But we have had so much trouble with hot lunches sent to school for our kids in the thermos. They have missed multiple lunches due to not being able to open them. Any tips would be appreciated although I am not keen on risking the no lunch situation again.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from cute container but not functional I have always loved hydro flask water bottles and have always put hot water or tea in them and never had issues with it going cold. So i hoped that this thermos would be the same but i found that it does not keep my food warm even if i preheat the thermos with boiling water to warm the metal. Also, every time i heat my food up and put in the thermos, when i go to eat the luke warm food, it seems that somehow the silicone band inside the cap has shifted and it is impossible to open the thermos. I’ll keep using it to bring my food since it’s a pretty container and the perfect size, i just wish i could use it for what i bought it for: having a hot lunch at school/work. Oh well

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Liquids Hot...Food, not so much I bought this to keep my daughters school lunch hot. I know that it is supposed to keep food/liquids hot for up to 4 hours. However, my daughter said that her food was not even warm when she opened it to eat after 3 hours. It did keep the soup hot though. I'm wondering if this is better for liquids than for actual food...Very disappointing after spending $40 for a very particular purpose.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Is mine defective? I've had the food flask for a while now but just used today to bring soup to work. Was I ever disappointed! I know it's supposed to keep at temperature for at least 4 hrs however when I reached into my drawer, the lid felt warm and the body cool. When I unscrewed the lid, I expected to feel the heat of the soup but did not. I took a spoonful and the soup was barely warm. Good thing I was at work so I just poured it in a bowl and re-heated in our microwave. I have just about every size drinking flask all of which worked as spec'd so I was very excited about the food flask. Maybe the one I have is defective but certainly a huge disappointment.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not outstanding but does the job short term This product is somewhat disappointing at keeping things Hot. I avoid microwaves to preserve nutrition. I count on hot soup, stews or other food to fuel my afternoon. I put the food in at 6:45am and by noon it's luke warm. If I wait any longer it's cool. All other products I use from Hydro Flask are always great at keeping things hot or cold. Water bottles, I sometimes use for coffee. I have tried priming the flask with hot water and also filling it so that there is no air which then causes the lid to create a very difficult to break suction seal. I found Stanley products to be more useful and reliable.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Would not buy I got this for christmas and tried putting in Mac and cheese to take with me to school for lunch. It was so cold and I could barely eat it. We’ve tried boiling water to activate the flask, and it still didn’t work. I tried putting rice in, and it still was barely room temperature.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disappointed I’ve had Hydroflask for over 10 years… This one doesn’t hold the heat at all. I bought it to take soup in for my lunches… I put boiling water in it to heat it up in the morning, then put steaming hot soup in it… By 11 o’clock it’s barely warm. Unfortunately, I bought two of them… One for myself and one as a gift…

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Impossible to open lid! I have both the large and small size and I actually use them every day for school or work. They work great but my issue is the flange is impossible to get back into position and then I cannot open the lid, it almost feels like it has pressurized and the lid just snaps back down when I try and open it. I’m very disappointed that this happens because I use it every day

Rated 1 out of 5 by from So disappointed I bought this for my picky eating sons lunch, we have hydro flask water bottles that we love so this was an obvious choice. I pack his lunch at 8:30am and he complains it is cold by lunch time at 11:30am. I do all the obvious things like warm the inside by putting hot water in it, filling it and making sure lid it tight but it's still an issue. I took it to work today to test it for myself and low and behold....it is lukewarm, at best, just 3 hours later. I did notice that there is a dent on the inside of the thermos but wouldn't think this should affect its function. The store we purchased it from does not allow returns since it's been used so we are now stuck with a product that doesn't do as promised. For the money spent, I expected more. Very disappointed in this product and does not fare well for my opinion of Hydro Flask in general.
    Date published: 2019-09-12
Rated 1 out of 5 by from So disappointed! We so wanted to live these flasks but it’s a total fail. The main issue is that the flange is difficult to re-seat after cleaning and routinely becomes dislodged. Sometimes this results in spilled soup. Sometimes it results in an impossible to open container. The other issue is that these are not very good at keeping hot food hot, or even very warm. Packed in an insulated bag they work okay. So sad we invested in 4 of these pricey suckers before we tried one out. If you still decide to buy, do not buy more than one is my advice.
    Date published: 2019-07-07
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Doesn't keep food hot at all I have two of their flasks and love them for coffee, so I went for this one for soup simply because the form-factor seems more appropriate. Unfortunately my soup is luke warm after 3 hours, which is worse than a traditional thermos by a fair bit. The lid isn't insulated and is significantly larger than other lids so a lot of heat is lost. Returning it and just putting my soup in a normal hydroflask which works at least 2-3x better. And to customer support -- the "consistency and texture" of food have nothing to do with thermodynamics, LOL!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disappointed I bought a 12oz food flask a few months ago and have tried to use it 3 times to take soup to work for lunch. I put boiling hot soup in it around 7am and by 11am the soup is just room temperature. I expected better results in something that costs this much.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Super dissapointing I was so excited to get this because I love my HydroFlask water bottle, but after using it a few times, I was disappointed to realize that my food was only kept lukewarm..on top of it, I always have trouble opening it as there seems to be some weird succion

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disappointing This was my fourth HydroFlask purchase. I love my other three and have never been disappointed in them. This food flask is a complete 180 from the products I've come to love. For one, the metal actually leaves a bit of a taste in the food that other Hyrdos don't. And as was mentioned, the top is kind of difficult to get off and on if you're not really paying attention. But I think what is most upsetting about this product is that it doesn't come clean. I wash it right away both with the bottle brush from this site and with a sponge. There's residue that I can't get off no matter how many different ways I try to get rid of it. The rubber seal on the lid is not sealed either so the liquid gets trapped in it and that's a whole separate cleaning issue. And the fact that it doesn't keep things hot or cold for longer is a letdown. For as much as this is, I expected better.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Is it good? Or bad? It’s fricken bad. I bought approximately 1 mounth ago and it sucks. First of all, it doesn’t keep the food warm like all the cups/bottles. Second of all, it dents. Last of all, the kid band will come off once it is screwd in place in the thermos which will make it very hard to take the lid off. I literally had to pry it open with an eating utensil. Don’t buy it. It’s terrible.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Does't keep food hot I have a 64 oz. growler that I love so I thought I would buy a 12 oz. food flask to take fishing. I am not happy with the food flask, it doesn't keep food hot. I put boiling hot oatmeal in and two hours later it is lukewarm at best, same with soup. The gasket on the lid keeps falling off. I have trouble opening the lid when there is something hot inside. Unfortunately the 12 oz. food flask is a waste of my money.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Can't get the lid off. I bought two of these for the kids lunches and the lids vacumn sealed so tight that neither of them could get the lid off, even with adult help. We've retried a number of times hoping that the first time was a fluke, but everytime we can't screw the lids off. We love our water bottles and coffee thermoses, just these suck.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from 6 hours equals luke warm purchased sunday and used on monday. piping hot steaming soup poured into my 12 oz flask at 545 am and lukewarm at 1145 am. i ensured the lid was tight. there was no spillage in my lunch bag. shouldn't this work the first time?

Rated 1 out of 5 by from dissapointed with heat retention I bought the 12oz food flask a few weeks ago specifically to be able to take soup to school with me for lunch. I have tried pre-heating the flask and heat my soup to boiling point before putting it in the flask, but regardless my soup is sometimes barely warm when I eat it approx. 4 hours later. There is nothing more disappointing then spending $40 on a thermos and it not keeping your food hot. I noticed someone mentioned having trouble opening the thermos. I also have this problem, and even though I find the design attractive, it would be nice to be able to grip the lid better. Overall I cannot give this thermos a good rating because it has not met my needs and has been a disappointing purchase.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from 12 oz. Food Flask I purchased two of the 12 oz. food flasks for my kids approximately a year ago thinking that when they attend school, they can have a nice hot meal versus cold foods such as sandwiches for days. I did a test before trying it out and boiled some water and poured it into both of the food flasks. I sealed it and placed it aside and after two hours, I went to check on it. I noticed that the lid was very warm and did not think anything of it. I had trouble trying to open it up too. As I finally got both of the flasks opened, I noticed that the liquid was not hot anymore and more luke warm. I was pretty bummed that I made a $60 purchase for two of these flasks and it didn't work. I finally was told to contact the company. I am now waiting for two lid replacements. Hopefully this fixes the problem I am able to send my kids to school with hot lunches.

  • is this a bear-safe container?

    Asked by: nataliegirl
Though we would like to believe that our flasks are indestructible and durable our consumers are not and we do not recommend sharing any interactions with wildlife like bears, coyotes, wolves etc. Explore nature with your best companion(hydroflask) but please do not poke the bear. It has not been tested against bears.

If the food is hot, how long will it stay hot?

    Asked by: Toni A
Our food flask is rated to keep food hot/cold for up to four hours. This is due to the surface area of the food flask, size of the cap, the consistency and texture of food and how it maintains temperature differently than liquid.

My husband bought this today at REI but it doesn't have the little info pamphlet inside. So I don't have instructions for heating it up or washing it, etc.  Can you tell me what that pamphlet says?

    Asked by: Kit7
There should have been a cardboard piece on the outside of the flask. The instructions would be on the inside of that. However, the flask would not need to be heated up with water or anything. You can put the food directly in the flask. Also, we do not recommend you put the flask in the dishwasher. They are hand wash only. Can you put the 12 oz. food flask in the oven?

    Asked by: Emmahaynes23
*You shouldn’t:* Put your flask in or on the stove: Due to the double wall vacuum insulating property of the flask, outside temperature will not change the inside beverage temperature. If you put your flask on any sort of stove or heat source, the heat will damage the outside of the flask.

    Asked by: booboo
Put your Hydro Flask in the freezer: Due to the double wall vacuum insulation, the water inside will be protected from the temperature inside the freezer and won’t freeze. If you want ice cold water, put some ice cubes inside your flask and notice how long it takes them to melt! You should not put the flask in the microwave.
